How to create the most beautiful Engagement ring for less than $500

We recently helped a couple in New Zealand design and make a beautiful engagement ring. The whole experience took a little over 8 weeks and the final ring came in at under $500.

We loved helping create a piece of jewellery that will last a lifetime and didn't cost a small house deposit.

Here is how this savvy couple saved themselves a small truckload of cash and came away with a ring that had a really good story behind it.

The couple were lucky enough to have everything you need to create an engagement ring. Even if they didn't quite know it. They had a beautiful signet ring that belonged to the groom to be's great great grandfather. The ring dated back to the early 1900's. The signet was 18K yellow gold and featured a beautiful 6.5mm white sapphire surrounded by a piece of onyx.

This ring had around 12 grams of 18K gold. Enough gold to recycle and create the new setting. We were able to used the remaining value from the gold to cover some of the setting and finishing costs.

So with the stone being provided and the recycled gold crediting the account almost enough for design, print, setting and finishing there was just our design and project management fee which for this ring was $450.

We try and be incredibly transparent around our costings and for this ring, the fee covered our time for sketching, quoting, design drawings, CAD renders and project management.

Below is the final design that is now safely on the finger of the bride to be. We've paired it with a piece from our latest collection VOW. It's our Lux ring and features 8 tiny diamonds.

Thoughtfully composed with modern values, Kate & Kole are reimagining the defines of a coastal design studio.
