We were so chuffed to be featured on local directory Hunter Hunter.

Are you both local to Newcastle?
Maddy has been based in Newcastle for about 5 years now and studies at Newcastle University, originally growing up in Dungog.

I moved to Newcastle from Sydney after a six month around the world trip and work in Newcastle as a designer at a local agency, Headjam. I am originally from a small town in New Zealand.

How would you describe the Kate & Kole style
The Kate & Kole style aims to reflect a simple yet modern design. Each ring is perfectly distinct and unique yet all designs meld cohesively together to form a stack that can be collected over time.

Yourself and Maddy are designers, so how did you go about making your range?
Firstly we create moodboards based on the style and concept of the range, we then sketch designs of the rings to each fit together and different stacking combinations. We then model them in a 3D program and send the designs to New York to be printed. Once we receive our designs back we plan and create concept mood boards and shoot the rings and promotional imagery.

How did you manage to stumble across a 3D printer in New York?
I was doing research into 3D printing for a Headjam assignment and came across an online service that allowed you to test 3D printing in a range of materials. I modelled a ring and sent off the test print.

The result was so exciting, I called Maddy immediately and over a glass of wine, while our boyfriends were watching a sailing race, we created an Instagram account, came up with a name and started planning the first range.

Does this mean a trip to the Big Apple is necessary in the near future?
Absolutely! Hopefully sooner rather than later- we would love to meet our manufacturer and be able to go through the whole process. We have worked really closely with them to get the results we want, but there is nothing like actually being there.

Is Kate & Kole only online at the moment?
We are currently only selling online – with both Maddy and I working and studying full time, being an online store makes it so manageable and sustainable. It suits our clientele as well. A lot of our sales have come from Instagram and other online platforms.

Where would you like to see Kate & Kole in 12 months time?
We will hopefully have our next range online and be planning our third! The most amazing part of how we manufacture the Kate & Kole rings is that we can experiment and develop new designs as quickly as we design them. It would be nice to have a little local following.
