Shopping for an engagement ring is super-exciting! But, it can also be overwhelming.
Especially if you’ve never shopped for a diamond before, it can be hard to know what to look for — and more importantly — what exactly it is that you want.
Fear not. While it may seem like a lot to take in, figuring out what to look for in a diamond is pretty straightforward once you wrap your head around the 4 Cs and diamond cuts.
The 4 Cs of Diamonds
While it may sound like a technical term, the concept of the 4 Cs is simple to break down.
The 4 Cs refers to the way diamonds are assessed and graded, with each C representing a different quality of the stone. The 4 Cs include:
- Cut: ‘Cut’ refers to the quality of the cut, as well as the shape. A well-cut diamond allows more light in the stone, making for that brilliant sparkling look that diamonds are known for.
- Colour: ‘Colour’ describes how much yellow is in the diamond. While it can be hard to tell by the naked eye, this is measured in comparison with other diamonds. The closer to colourless a diamond is, the more valuable.
- Clarity: ‘Clarity’ is how perfect the diamond is. The closer to flawless a diamond is, the more expensive it will be. The higher the clarity, the less impurities in the stone there will be. We work with very strict tolerances to ensure all our lab grown diamonds chosen for your ring are eye-clear, which means a minimum of VS2. The cut of the diamond can also play a part in how highly clarity should be favoured in selecting a stone.
- Carat: ‘Carat’ is a measure of a diamond’s overall weight. Carat does not necessarily just refer to the length and width of the stone, but also accounts for the depth.
Diamond Cuts for Engagement Rings
Now that you know the 4 Cs, it’s time for the fun part: Choosing a shape. Whether you go for a classic round diamond, an angular emerald cut, or fun pear shape, it’s all about personal preference and deciding which stone suits your personal style best.
Round Cut Diamond
Cleo Round Diamond Engagement Ring
It doesn’t get more classic than a round cut diamond.
There’s a reason why round cut stones are a popular engagement ring choice, as the shape lends itself perfectly to a diamond’s natural sparkle. A classic round cut is perfect for amplifying the brilliance of a diamond and looks lovely on any band shape.
Oval Cut Diamond
Clara Oval Diamond Engagement Ring
Slightly different, but equally elegant, this diamond cut is on the rise. And for good reason.
While oval cut diamonds give off the same classic feel as a round-cut, they’re less common, and therefore they feel more unique. Additionally, oval cut diamonds have the illusion of looking larger, and can even make your fingers look longer, thanks to the elongated silhouette.
Radiant Cut Diamond
Rhea Diamond Radiant Cut Engagement Ring
As the name suggests, radiant cut rings are a very radiant option, perfect for those who want a lot of sparkle.
Though the shape of the stone is similar to that of an emerald, the diamond’s facets are cut in the way that round stones are. The result is an eye-catching sparkle that seems to echo throughout the stone.
Emerald Cut Diamond
Eva Diamond Emerald Cut Engagement Ring
With its long cut and flat surface, emerald cuts are a stunning way to show off a diamond with high clarity. While the cut may seem classic, there are plenty of cool ways to wear an emerald cut diamond that feels contemporary. For something that looks unique and fresh, try an East West setting like our Fae Ring, which lays the classic emerald cut on its side for an extended sparkle across the finger.
Pear Cut Diamond
Lyla Pear Diamond Engagement Ring
What isn’t to love about a pear cut? This unique shape will make your ring stand out. Given it’s oblong shape, the classic pear cut is flattering for every hand shape. With similar facets to a round cut diamond, a pear cut is also nice and sparkly.
Marquise Cut Diamond
Mya Marquise Diamond Engagement Ring
This modern cut is perfect for brides who want something that stands out. Longer and skinnier than other cuts, a marquise cut diamond is a striking way to incorporate a classic diamond into your engagement ring. At once classic and fresh, the shape is sure to feel unique for years to come.
Cushion Cut Diamond
Similar to a round cut diamond but with soft, square edges, cushion cut diamonds are increasingly popular for a unique and modern option. Thanks to their round edges, cushion cut diamonds are very durable, while still offering a fashionable look that will stand out from the crowd.
